Canada is the top export market for roughly two dozen states, mostly clustered along the northern border and through the industrial Midwest and Southeast — a footprint that includes states like Maine, Michigan, and North Dakota, where Canadian buyers take a huge share (41%, 39%, and 81% of exports, respectively), down to places like Wyoming and Alabama where Canada still edges out every other country. Caveats

  • Most sources report Canada as the #1 market for 27 states as of 2025 data, but the underlying source article (Progressive Policy Institute, citing the U.S. Commerce Department's TradeStats Express) explicitly names only the 26 states listed above — so one state's identity is ambiguous in that particular writeup.
  • This picture has shifted a lot recently. As recently as 2023, Canada was the top market for 36 states; Trump-era tariffs on Canadian goods and retaliatory effects pulled that number down to the high-20s by 2025, with some trade shifting toward other partners.
  • States like Florida (Canada is a close second to Brazil) and Arkansas (Canada is second to Mexico) are examples of states where Canada is a major but not top partner — worth knowing if you're looking for a sharper cutoff.
